I found this book really helpful when researching the genre of silent films being distributed in Australia in the 1920's and 1930's. Along with romance and drama, it seems that bush themes were quite popular, as people seemed to relate to them. Producers and directors wanted a sense of realism to come through in their films.

I found that it was no surprise that American culture began to overtake Australian story lines in the 1920's. It's mentioned in the text that the Government release 50 or so short films in order to regain a substantial share of audience attention back to Australian cinema. (Casey)

Synopsis An overview of Australian cinema from 1896-1929 including scripts. (Casey)
