Synopsis |
Used In Melbourne Capitol Theater Assignment (Greg Wanniarachchi)
In this brochure, the main focus in the highlighted history written by Peter Y. Navaretti who was the Heritage consultant when RMIT purchased the Melbourne Capitol Theatre. It has interesting facts such as the âSave the Capitolâ campaign(1964), a public outcry which was organised by the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects and the National Trust of Australia (Victorian Branch).
Robin Boyd, a Melbourne Architectural Critic made an appeal to the owners of the Capitol House where that âno action would be taken that would preclude the re-opening of the theatre if, and when, a suitable lessee came alongâ. It was hardly fought by both parties and in the end a compromise was reached. The settlement meant that the Capitol had to reduce the seating capacity was reduced to 800 seats and the original stalls and street level entrance foyer were to be demolished. This made way for the shopping arcade that still stands in 2011.
Also details of when Parmount sold the capitol theatre to Commercial Enterprises Ltd. for almost and year (1940). Commerical Enterprises ended up using the same staff until Hoyts became a partner in the theatre and ended up taking over the lease in 1941.
