Comments A newspaper article about Trak Cinema from the Malvern Prahran Leader in 1996.
Synopsis This was a great article to find out about what people thought about Trak at the time, particularly during the opening of multiplex theatres nearby.

It makes apparent that Palace Cinema was the new owners of Trak and had no desires to turn it into a multiplex theatre like its rival the Jam Factory even though it had ‘reduced patronage’ during screenings there.

Now that Trak is closed it is interesting to see what then general manager Sam Dipietro believed, in that audiences preferred the ‘ big screen experience’ in comparison to multiplex cinemas and further that Trak was selective about which titles were shown and specialised in art-house cinema which they were reluctant to change.

There is a picture of both Palace Cinema’s general manager Sam Diepietro and program manager Kim Petalas accompanying the article.

The most interesting paragraph of the article is the closing in which Brown states that the Jam Factory had ‘applied for four more screens and 1600 seats’ and the Longford Cinema ‘two more screens and 320 seats’. This is a large indicator as to why it had to force closure although at the time as stated in the article, Trak was focused on refurbishment and ‘other plans such as luncheon screenings and classic movie seasons’ to compete with the multiplex cinemas.

Overall it is quite a short article but very informative.
