Comments Using this information on the Savoy cinema I was able to make a comparison between the Australia Twin and the Savoy. They were both known to bring in niche crowds with their frequent screening of foreign films. A further similarity between both the cinemas is that they screened what the public would see as controversial in nature. The Australia Twin began screening ‘X’ rated films in the 80’s and the Savoy showed ‘sex education’ films throughout its opening. As these cinemas were geographically extremely close they would have been in direct competition with one another. It is ‘like’ cinemas such as these that may have led to the closure of the Australia Twin in 1987. This is useful to my research as it may have been an environmental factor in the closing of the Twin cinemas.

Synopsis Ron Landen reminisces of his time working in cinemas, pre- television days over the years. He worked as a projectionist for many years. He worked with companies such as ‘Western Theatre’ Brunswick, ‘Burnley Theatre’ Burnley and the ‘Astor Theatre’ in St Kilda. It was at this stage that television began to really erupt. Ron’s next cinema was on the ‘Savoy Theatre’, situated between Little Bourke and Bourke St. Savoy Theatre ran mainly foreign films and at one time screened sex education films.
