This article includes comments from the general manager of Valhalla cinema, Mr John Rouse in relation to the cinemaâs closure on June 1996 after its nine-year lease from the Westgarth Picture Theatre and brief history of Valhalla cinema.
According to Mr Rouse, Valhalla cinema was never affected by cheap ticket by other big cinemas, because most of Valhallaâs patrons were using student and unemployed concession tickets. Especially the cinema was preferred by students from Vermont, they often came to the cinema in groups then they established relationship there.
However, the cinema was not able to recapture the popularity of its heyday in Richmond where the cinemaâs original home, and he said âThe era of the single-screen cinema is just about over.â
Mr Rouse also pointed out that Valhallaâs closure means end of the form, but there will be similar cinemas to Valhalla in some shape or form someday.
This article is useful to learn that Valhalla also existed as a social place to establish relationship with other people. This might keep local audiences because other big cinemas cannot be such place for audiences.
However, this article does not mention about the golden age of the Valhalla cinema. Although the number of audiences between the age and present is mentioned, it does not focus on how the audiences were decreased and the reason why the cinema moved to Northcote.
