This particular section of the Victorian Gazette refers to the Cinematograph Films (Australian Quota) Act of 1935.
The Cinematograph Films (Australian Quota) Act of 1935 refers to the act which the government put forward in order to regulate the films that were going through all Australian cinemaâs at the time. The act details a âquotaâ of Australian films which all Australian cinemaâs were to fill by showing throughout the year in order to remain operating.
This particular section of the Victorian Gazette refers to exemptions to the Act being made for certain cinemaâs under the recommendation of the Films Advisor; Henry Stephen Bailey; Chief Secretary of the State of Victoria. The Camden is one of 80 theatres/cinemas which have been exempt for the reason stated; âthat it was not practicable by reason of the quantity of Australian films available for the exhibitorsâ.
The declaration also goes on to state that the exhibitors are only exempt âto the extent indicated in each caseâ. For example the âExtent of exemption from quotaâ given to the Camden is âtwo-fifthsâ. Whereas Lygon Theatres Pty Ltd in East Brunswick is given âone wholeâ and the Regent Theatres Pty Ltd is given a âfour-ninthsâ exemption from the quota.
Other cinemaâs who gained the same exemption were the Memorial, Benella; the Royal, Castlemaine; the Star, Dimboola; the New Grand, Footscray and the Waverly, East Malvern. (CathS)
