âParlato in Italianoâ, published by the Myrtleford and District Historical society, provides researchers information on Italian Cinema in Myrtleford during the 1960 period. It gives an insight into what the experience would have been like at the Cosmopolitan Theatre too, which screened Italian and Greek Cinema.
âParlato in Italianoâ provides an interesting overview of Italian Cinema. Even though, it is not specifically targeted towards the Cosmopolitan Theatre, it gives an insight into the experiences patrons had when viewing Italian films.
In particular, page 33 goes on to discuss the Italian Cinema Circuit in Melbourne during the 1960âs. This page reflects upon the migration of Italians between 1951 and 1961 where 170,00 migrants were settled in Australia. This saw the rise and success of many Italian language theatre venues operating across inner suburban Melbourne.
Page 36 also states that these Italian films were not only used for social occasions and a form of entertainment; however useful in terms of education for children too. It aided in acquiring Italian language skills.
This book expresses that Italian cinema offered the audience a meeting place, to socialise and to evoke recollections of their homeland in Europe. More specifically, âParlato in Italianoâ points out that this is a shared experience; where it helps Italian migrants in giving them a sense of belonging and community within and beyond the Myrtleford region. It was also important for these Italian migrants to hear the Italian language orated. (Corene Innes)
