Review (Jessica Eslick):
The chapter regarding the Park theatre contains details and highly descriptive notes regarding its architecture and structure. If researching the venue from this standpoint it would be an invaluable reference and the images included give a broad picture of the building. The text cited within majority of the three pages is taken from Building (March 24, 1939, pp. 29,34 & 39). No more information about the original text is given which could be quite frustrating if trying to locate the original as âBuildingâ is a broad word and may be hard to pinpoint.
The cited text itself paints a beautiful image and is either meant to elevate and praise the architecture or the author was enamoured on it himself. Either way the description persuades one of the structural grandeur.
Unfortunately I am interested in researching events prior to the opening, and it makes no reference to the issues they had gaining permits from the council or occurrences that hindered the building process.

Synopsis |
This reference deals with pages 257-259 of the book detailing the Park Theatre, Albert Park.
The chapter gives architecturally relevant information regarding the Park theatre including the date it opened (December 24, 1938) and the Architects and Builders.
It sights Building (March 24, 1939, pp. 29,34 & 39) giving a lengthy descriptive walk through of the buildings exterior and interior design elements and features. It details everything from the colours of the walls and ornaments and the âgold brocaded velvet stage curtainâ (p 258) to the buildings ââlimpetâ flocculent asbestos acoustic treatmentâ (p 258).
The chapter is accompanied by four images.
The first (p 257) is a drawing revealing a cross section of the floor plan that shows the basic layout. It is noted as âLong sectionâ and possibly originated from the building plans.
The second is an âArchitectâs perspective sketchâ that details the proposed exterior of the building on page 258.
The third and fourth appear to be photographs, the first of the âentrance lobby and ticket boxâ and the second a close up of the âauditorium ceiling : detail of plaster lighting troughsâ (p 259) |
