Comments Greg Wanniarachchi:

This was a bible to Melbourne Capital Theater, most information I found on the Capital Theater was in this book. I also found the writer very hostile towards the ownership of Hoyts. End comment

Synopsis Used In Melbourne Capitol Theater Assignment (Greg Wanniarachchi)

After the Melbourne Capital Theatre was build, Paramount pictures leased on the Capitol Theatre from 1924 to 1940. This was a great time as the Capitol theatre was getting the best movies that Paramount was producing. After 1940, the Capitol was taken over by Hoyts, which was the theatre’s standings greatly diminished.

The Capitol theatre opened with a seating capacity of 2137. This decreased to 2115 by the mid-1935 as it had to make room to showcase a 4000 colour lights of red, green, blue and white. The theatre revolutionized the Australian cinema industry and asked the question of other cinema companies to build more comfortable theatre’s and try to keep up the Capitol Theatre.

In the 1960's saw the downfall of the capital theatre. Sales during the 1962-63 were very poor as cinema took a back seat to television, there wasn't any indication people were leaving their TV sets and running to the cinema. Also during this time, Hoyts lease expired on October 1963 and they decided not to renew it. On Wednesday 5th of February 1964 the Capitol theatre closed its doors.

The Capitol Theatre re-opened in 17 December 1965.
