This announcement gives several important facts about the venue that were otherwise hard to find. It also describes the venue as "one of the most up-to-date theatres for picture shows in the State". Although CATHS lists the theatre as the Star/Lyric, it is listed here, only days after opening, simply as The Lyric.
This article is also useful confirmation of the opening date of the theatre (which is listed differently in CATHS and CAARP), as it gives a definitive date of the opening as the Saturday before (the paper was published on a Monday), making it 4th November 1911. It also is useful in giving an impression of the original layout and construction of the venue as it lists the seating capacity (2300), the architects (H B Gibbs & Finlay) and the builders as Lockington and Sinclair. It also lists the cost of the construction as £10,000, which seems a considerable amount for the 1910's.
The article states that there were more than one "picture" shown, which is the norm in the silent era when films were quite short. Only one of the films shown is mention â "Faust". Assuming that this is the 1911 version of the film of this title, this was a 15 minute picture directed by Cecil M. Hepworth and distributed by his production company (UK based). It would have been accompanied by music by "Vivaphone" which was a system of gramaphone recordings that were synchronised to the film. |
