Comments The article focuses on the socialism on television, interestingly although the article does suggest there is evidence and trends that supports the fact that television viewership goes up while cinema audiences goes down, a 'casual' relationship cannot be determined. This is possibly due to the fact that many social, economical and cultural changes also occurring in the world could have an impact on cinema without television having the complete blame.

This report describes the measurement of television’s effect on attendance in British cinemas. I used it as a reference in general because I don't think the results can be confined only to a British audiences, of course the facts, figures and statistics are specific. However the information can be attributed to a wide scope of audiences and locations around the world.

The article suggests that there are credible reasons other than television which can possibly be taken into consideration such as the changing nature of films in a post-war time, or even a disposition of audiences to return to the social conditions they were in before war times. Suggesting that cinema going was related to escapism relating to events of the time.

This article is based upon part of a wider study—namely, the impact of television in 50 different fields of interest apart from cinema. William A. Belson was formerly a senior psychologist in the Audience Research Department of the British Broadcasting Corporation. (Rohan Mirchandaney)
