Comments I found that this link has been the most helpful so far in terms of statistical data about the Burnley Theatre. It provides a great overview on capacity, how many screens they used, and also opening and closing dates.

The layout of the website is very straightforward and easy to navigate. You simply search for the venue of your choice, and the corresponding links appear. I have been finding the task of researching the Burnley Theatre a little tricky so far; so finding web links such as Caarp have provided some great information, including the references they have used to gather the information themselves.

What I found the most interesting on this link was that the theatre’s capacity changes. From 1950-1954 there was a decline in available seating, then just five years later the theatre reached its maximum capacity of 1085 seats. It just made me curious as to what caused the decline, and how they managed to fix it.

I find it amazing looking at the capacity figures that 1085 people were able to fit into one cinema. There was only one screen, and paralleled to the cinemas we have today, it held a lot more than we could imagine compared to our modern theatres. Were the theatres architecturally designed differently? Or is this generation simply more consumed by the idea of health and safety, that we can’t handle sharing a room with that many strangers?

The capacity in itself would have made the cinematic experience so much different. The atmosphere would have been overwhelmingly alive and robust with live music and laughter, despite the lack of sound from the actual film. I can imagine just by analyzing this website, that the citizens of Burnley would have taken advantage of this now iconic cinema during its operation dates, but now we can only wonder.
