Comments This page solves the confusion about the differnce in locations between Preston, Thomastown and Frankston Drive-Ins. Skyline Preston was built behind a quarry in the northern suburb of Reservoir. In the early days business boomed but soon the competition followed. The Olympic twin, built less than a mile away, on a much more obvious site, would surely have dented Prestons trade. Later Village opened Reservoir drive-in that was actually in Thomastown, this caused confusion as to what was Preston drive-in doing in Reservoir and Reservoir drive-in doing in Thomastown! Preston closed on the night in 1984 when 5 other Melbourne drive-ins closed and Hoyts and Village combined their drive-in operations.
Synopsis The Drive-ins Downunder website is a tribute to the drive-in theatres of Australia and the world. The author, David Kilderry, accepts emails from casual viewers of the site describing changes to cinemas in their local area to keep the information up to date and relevant. The venues are grouped alphabetically, and into "state or territory of interest" links, to ensure finding a particular cinema easy. The website also offers regular editorials by "Buddy". The current publication titled "Are Drive-ins Dead?" offers the opinion that the drive-in theatre may well become an icon of the twenty first century as well. Additionally, there are links to "Features on drive-ins", "world-wide drive-ins", "Projection booths" for drive-ins and indoor theatres in Australia, "Merchandise for sale" and great links to other interesting and relevant sites. The whole website is bathed in historical photographs of various venues, accompanied by little quotes encouraging viewers to keep the drive-in cinema experience alive and well.
