First recorded mention that I have found of the Fitzroy Council responding to complaints about "insufficient urinal accommodation" at the Lyric, only a year after the theatre opened. Interesting to speculate that this was evidenced by men using the side alley to relieve themselves, as this is noted in later complaints about the venue in council notes in 1913, 1914 and 1916. In fact in the same paper in 1917, "complaints were still made of a nuisance in a lane adjoining the Lyric Theatre in Johnston Street, owing to the urinal accommodation at the theatre being inadequate".
This would indicate that the problem had not been solved at the theatre. it is interesting to speculate whether audiences had a high number of men as opposed to women at the time, or if this was just a case of men feeling free to urinate in public. It may also be that it was not just patrons of the theatre causing this problem, as Fitzroy boasted a number of pubs and hotels in the area at the time.
Having recently photographed the venue, I can testify that the lane way is still there and according to the smell of it on that warm day, the problem still exists. However, as the venue is now a retail warehouse, the problem can no longer be blamed on theatre patrons. |
