The French Film Database: French Cinema 1980-2005
School of Languages – University of Melbourne
In association with Cinema Studies – RMIT University

Welcome to the French Film Database. This website has grown out of an Australian Research Council funded grant on the study of French cinema since 1980. The site makes available in readily accessible form information about a large number of French films and their directors during that period. While the list of films is necessarily selective, it is intended that it continue to grow.

The information for this database has been gathered collectively over three years. The project is not intended as a history of French cinema but rather as a source of data on directors and their films, ranging from reviews and reception data to comprehensive filmographies. This information may be useful for both researchers and students of French cinema.

By clicking here you will also find more information on the funding mechanisms that underpin the creation and continued existence of French cinema. The French aids to cinema are renowned for both their complexity and their efficacy and this database aims to provide a guide to the inner workings of this system.
