Comments Charlie and Boots is one of the Australian film industries latest success stories. On opening weekend the film experienced the best opening weekend of any Australian film, when it was released on father’s day. The film is an Australian drama and comedy tangled into one road trip between two of the Australian film industries greatest, Paul Hogan and Shane Jacobson. The film may be considered to have a broad target audience, appealing to people of all ages. Perhaps an older age group may however be best to recognise the connotations of love and loss within the film. Being recognised as one of the Australian film industries more successful films, Charlie and Boots has a lot to tell viewers about the importance of our home grown industry. A true Aussie film, written by an Aussie, played by Aussie legends, and filmed in various iconic Australian locations, Charlie and Boots is an excellent illustration of what the Australian film industry is all about. Whilst the story of a road trip between father and son may not require a rocket scientist to decipher, underlying messages play an important role in the text, proving to viewers that the Australian film industry is a lot more complex than one may imagine.
Synopsis After the death of his beloved wife Grace, Charlie McFarland is devastated and withdraws into grief. Seeing his father unable to leave bed somedays, Charlie's youngest son Boots, who has in recent years become estranged from his family, decides to take action. Boots convinces his reluctant father to take a fishing trip with him, however it is not until the pair are well on their way that Charlie decides to confess they are actually headed toward the Cape York Peninsula, 3000 miles away from their home town of Warrnambool. Charlie wants no part of this and does his best to escape from Boots on several occassions. The story follows the pairs journey from South West Victoria to the tip of the country, and the characters they meet along the way. Eventually, the experiences that the father and son go through reopen old wounds and the pair find themselves connecting in a way they have never experienced. Charlie and Boots is a tale of father and son and relationships. How the death of one has the ability to rekindle another.
