Comments A.E. Lydford was born in Bristol in 1874. He migrated to Australia in 1905 and established himself as a builder in the Melbourne suburb of Oakleigh. Mr. Lydford is notable for being the first cinema managers in Victoria to recognise the benefits of 'talkies' over silent films. His installation of the required technology meant that the New Mentone was the first cinema outside the Melbourne CBD to be able to screen films with audio.
