Therefor an incomplete picture of industry practices is given. Whilst historical and political themes are alluded to through hughes' response to questions about representation of themes, economic and political information is lacking due to a primary focus on aesthetics. | Synopsis |
Hughes explains his choice of futuristic subject matter for 'All that is Solid' was to create a social commentary voicing concerns about future industry practices within Australian film, focusing particularly on the importance of documentary. He describes his stylistic approach to documentary making by challenging established conventions of documentary through the inclusion of dramatic narrative sequences. Hughes also makes reference to his Aesthetic choices such as sequencing, symbolism, and allegory in combination with interviews as a way of exploring the relationship between form and content, challenging the assumed conventions of documentary making that manipulate information to illustrate a point. He also pays homage to the collective minorities within the community that have supported his productions, and therefor have become an element of meaning within hughes' representations of society.
