Comments In terms of this book, it is required to find that why Zinnemann was interested in making a film about Australian in 1920s. Actually, Zinnemann had been asked if he were interested in making a film about Australian life in 1920s, so he had read the book which is called ‘The Sundowners’ written by Jon Cleary. Since he had enjoyed the novel he has decide to make a film based on the novel story. It could be guessed that Zinnemann felt an attraction for ideal material that Australian traditional factors such as the outback, natural atmosphere and free life of people especially in 1920s. It is because these things were fairly new material for the film industry and audiences at that time. More importantly, Zinnemann focused on the term ‘mateship’ in this film through the teenager son, Sean. As Zinnemann said, ‘The Australian tradition has been to show such mateship as existing only between men, so I tried to express it by using another dimension’. Therefore, Sean was described as showing mateship between a man and woman in a marriage. Finally,it can be comprehended all of these new sources were the interesting point for Zinnemann as a film director that he would want to make a film about the Australian family in the outback of 1920s.
