Comments Whilst Joseph Perry didn’t have any involvement with The Tivoli theatre, his sons did, however his biography was appealing because it reveals a pivotal time in film history for Australia. Joseph found himself at the centre of film during the latter end of the 1890’s and the early 1900’s. His sons would eventually take over the throne and go onto run a number of popular theaters throughout Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.

Joseph Perry was entrepreneurial in many ways as his talents aspired him to great heights throughout his career. All three of his sons (one in which, was a half brother to the other two – Stanley Perry) would follow in their father’s footsteps, all being inspired by Joseph’s passion for film. Film was a hobby of Joseph’s, which initially started out with him and his first wife Anne Laurenson doing evangelical work for the army, however his camera ability was so highly regarded that he was soon hired to do a magic lantern show. With the rise of moving pictures Joseph was awarded work as a film producer. Despite being married a second time eight years later to his new wife Julia Leah, Joseph was still committed to his work with the Salvation Army intertying his faith with the films he was producing in Melbourne. Several of his films were documentaries aimed at promoting religion which eventually brought about his downfall as a film-maker. Joseph Perry was unable to continue making his religious films due to moral effects, which saw him resign from The Salvation Army in 1910. He finished off his career undertaking management based roles at other major production firms in order to keep doing what he loved. Joseph Perry was undoubtedly a pioneer of the Australian Film Industry at the time of its inception when moving pictures were introduced.
