Comments Interesting announcement of a boycott of "Fatty" Arbuckle films. This follows his trials (three separate ones) for the rape of starlet Virginia Rappe. Although acquitted, the scandal ruined his career in Hollywood and led to his films to be boycotted by many groups including this one in Melbourne. Interesting to see that scandals surrounding film stars existed even a hundred years ago. I'm not sure that such a story would cause a boycott now or make a star's films more popular than ever.

A note at the end of the ad states "NOTE.- The Proprietors and Managers of the above mentioned theatres wish the public of Victoria to clearly understand that this decision regarding the screening of Arbuckle pictures was arrived at prior to the release of the film now being shown." This would indicate that there was an Arbuckle film still being shown at the time of this ad. This is useful for my search for information regarding films or entertainments that were shown at this venue.

Another interest fact comes from the number of Melbourne venues listed - 71. According to 'Ten Years of Progress in the Motion Picture Industry in Australia', the publication of the Union Theater group which was the largest in Australia in 1921, the number of cinemas they controlled in Australia was 80. (Thorne, Ross 1981, Cinemas of Australia via USA, Architecture Dept., University of Sydney. p68.). This suggests that the number of theatres listed in the boycott probably represents a large proportion of the theatres in operation in Melbourne at the time. I hope to find more figures to verify this.
Synopsis Announcement to the public that "Members of the Victorian 'Cinematograph Exhibitors' Association" (including the Star Lyric) will not screen the films of Roscoe Arbuckle. Entitled "Notice To Picture Theatre Patrons", it lists 71 theatres as well as "Other Suburban and Country Shows".
